New Year’s resolutions often fall by the wayside within the first week of January. If you’ve already unplugged the treadmill and given up on the idea of giving up TV, here are three resolutions that can take the place of those. These resolutions can be the key to helping you rebuild your marriage in 2013.
They’re from a post by ForYourMarriage.com, a blog put out by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, but they are by no means just for Catholic couples. You can read the full list of marriage resolutions in the post, but we want to share three that we like the most.
1. Schedule several “Date Nights” for the first few months of the year.
We’ve always been big advocates of date nights, but we love this idea of scheduling them now for several months ahead. Go ahead and write in what you’ll do and where you’ll go. It’ll make you more accountable for keeping the date and also make it easier to schedule babysitting and work commitments ahead of time.
2. Draw up your 2013 household budget together.
Fights over money and differing financial priorities are one of the leading causes of divorce. Agreeing on your financial goals and your budget now could make the difference between a marriage in ruins and a marriage that sees its best year ever this year. Bear in mind, you not only both have to agree to the budget; you both also have to stick to it.
3. As a couple, do something for someone else
Working as a couple to help someone else is a great way to build unity and rebuild a marriage that has gone stale. There are so many things you can do in your own community.
Resolve to do at least one service activity this year, as a family or a couple. Perhaps it’s bringing canned goods to the local food pantry on a regular basis or helping out with a parish fundraising project.”
Check out the many different projects in your area and agree on one or two that you BOTH think will be meaningful for you. You’ll be helping your marriage while you’re helping your neighbors.
You may not get back on the treadmill or give up donuts, but if you stick with these three resolutions you can have your best year yet!
